Keyhole technology is a
trenchless operation that greatly reduces restoration costs
while efficiently completing maintenance and operations
work normally performed in a traditional excavation.
Common applications include:
- leak repair
- cathodic protection
- new
service installation
- service abandonment
- spot
locates and other tasks
The keyhole
process involves making a 12- to 18-inch diameter cut
in the pavement, removing the pavement coupon and setting
it aside for future reinstatement, using vacuum excavation
to access the pipes below the ground, and performing
operations on these pipes with the use of long-armed
tools.
Once the operation is complete, the original pavement
coupon is permanently reinstated in the roadway with
a special bonding compound.
Keyhole
technology has been compared to arthroscopic surgery – making
a small incision rather than a big one. Besides cost savings
in the final restoration of the pavement, time savings
are gained as well, and the roadway can be opened to traffic
more quickly.

Utilicor Technologies Inc., manufacturers of coring
equipment
and core
reinstatement-bonding
compound, will core the
pavement
and permanently reinstate the core once
the repair has been
completed.
